Congratulations to the community of Trochu for supporting another worthy cause, the UFA Small Town Heroes contest.
Troy Niemi, everybody's best friend at countless community events, received 9184 online votes, good for eighth place for the province of Alberta.
Judges took votes as well as the profiles of nominees into account in awarding prizes. Dr. Lewke-Bugle of Milk River (119,617 votes) and Doris McFarlane (3001 votes) of Beaverlodge won Paul Brandt concerts and $2500 each for their towns. Eight other entries won $1000 for their community projects.
Although he didn't place in prizes, Troy, with his happy face, is a hero in Trochu.
Former Trochu resident, Deanna Thompson, was a late entry and received 235 votes for her work with the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew and her heroic actions during the Bali bombing in 2002.
