Lady Smith Café hosts memorial fundraiser

20180412 Lady Smith Fundraiser JL 0009

On Thursday, April 12, the Lady Smith Café, in Trochu, hosted a fundraiser for the Humboldt Broncos bus crash victims and their families, and for Ryan McBeath, the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs hockey player who was killed on the foggy morning of March 13, on Hwy 27 west of Trochu.

The Lady Smith Café’s goal was to raise $1,000, and they raised $2,250.00 from the desserts and donations.

All of the proceeds are being donated, half to the Humboldt Broncos GoFundMe page and the other half to the Ryan McBeath Memorial Fund.

The fundraiser went all day, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and was put together by Brian and Susie Petursson, the owners of Lady Smith Café.

“I hope other places do this too because it really felt good,” said Susie.

Susie said that their staff at the Lady Smith Café spent 13 hours making the 225 desserts a day before. The staff brainstormed on what they wanted to do to help, and came up with the dessert fundraiser.

Susie said that if you can use your talent, it doesn’t feel like work, and it feels even better to use those talents to help out.

With helping out, Susie said that the staff’s mood has gone up, and having the staff together making the desserts and getting ready for the fundraiser has also bonded them as a group.

Susie said that they decided to do this event because when she heard about the tragedies on the news she wanted to do something that could help out. She also wanted to do something for the hockey players because she also has two nephews who play hockey who are the same age as the victims.

Many locals and local businesses either came out to the restaurant or ordered out desserts to support the causes.

“I just want people to know that we’re thankful that they came.”
