Kneehill Early Years Fair runs February 16

Research shows that the early years are important for a child's ability to learn and create, to trust, and to develop a strong sense of themselves.
The first five years of a child's life is a crucial developmental time, and it is also an essential time for parents to stay informed.
Kneehill Regional FCSS, along with a number of agencies, have been working together since August 2010 to bring Three Hills the Kneehill Early Years Fair: Finding Your Child's Strengths.
The event will take place Wednesday, February 16, at Bethel Evangelical Missionary Church. From noon-6 pm, the building will be filled with resources for parents and their children, ages 0-4. All families must register before February 9 to schedule a time, in order to cut down on overcrowding.
This is an opportunity for parents/caregivers to ask questions and gather information about topics that interest them regarding their children, and parenting.
Approximately 16 displays/booths from services of all types will be present. Each must have activities that are developmentally appropriate. Expect to see a number of booths from Alberta Health Services, including a speech therapist, dental representative, and a nutritionist. Other representatives will range from licensed child care, to a Kneehill Peace Officer providing Child Find Finger Printing.
An Ages and Stages developmental milestones test is available for parents. The test will help determine if a child has reached the expected milestones for their age. If not, the fair will feature plenty of resources to answer specific questions, and provide activities that can be done at home to further progress their skills. This test can be found on the website www.goldenprairieplc.ca. It can also be filled out at the fair. Results from the test will be given to parents at the door.
Kneehill Adult Learning Society (KALS) is coordinating a gently used book exchange for books to be given out at the fair. Community members with books that are age appropriate, and still in good condition, can drop them off at the municipal offices in Acme, Carbon, Linden, Three Hills, and Trochu by February 9.
The Early Years Fair has been sponsored by ConocoPhillips and Pengrowth Corp., as well as many other donations, which is why the day is free of charge.
Families in need of transportation to and from the event are asked to call Shelley at 403-443-3800.
This program is fairly unique, but much needed, as there tends to be a gap between birth and the time a child attends school, before a child is properly assessed. For a day of interacting, learning, fun, and snacks, register for the Kneehill Early Years Fair by calling 403-443-3800, or follow the Early Years Fair link online at www.goldenprairieplc.ca.
