Mike Edel to perform Saturday, Feb. 5

Mike Edel, former alumni of Dr. Elliott and Acme School has put both these schools on his Western Canadian Tour that debuts his eight-song CD "The Last of Our Mountains". Mike is now 25 years old, a singer/songwriter based out of Victoria. He released this album independently on January 25, 2011. His celebratory tour started in Vancouver on January 14 and will end back in Victoria on March 4.
While in Alberta, Mike will be performing in Medicine Hat, Red Deer, and Calgary and then for students at Dr. Elliott School on Tuesday, Feb. 1 and at Acme School on Wednesday. After heading off to Leduc and Edmonton for more concerts, he will be back in Linden to play in front of the home crowd at the Cultural Center on Saturday, Feb. 5. Posters around town show that tickets to the event can be purchased at the door. His tour then has him returning back over the mountains with concert stops at venues in Fernie, Langley, Whistler, Victoria and Tofino.
Mike lists himself in the musical genre of Folk/Pop and his music often marries the two in a quiet, gentle, easy listening kind of way. One of the tracks 'Bottom Floor Apartment' has such a sweet sound but the lyrics betray it as one of those bitter-sweet situations when love and wishful thinking isn't quite enough to pay the bills. 'The Two of Us' is innocent and romantic but without the burden of bills. However, 'You Sent Me Two Letters' uses the strength of simple lyrics to portray the emotional struggle of a heart wanting to be pulled back into an old relationship ("still feel it in my chest") while the upbeat and catchy melody seems to signify the siren call of freedom and the need to move on. While some songs deal with the notion of romance "there's a piece of a girl in everyone', other song tracks - 'I'm Moving On' and 'The Country Where I Came From' - show the struggle between independence and adventure versus the maturing side of a man's nature as he contemplates settling down in the easy-going pastures of his youthful memories.
"The Last of Our Mountains' was produced by Vancouver's Winston Hauschild, a Canadian record producer and singer/songwriter who has worked with over 40 artists and bands such as Vancouver's Hannah Georgas. Musically speaking, Mike and Hannah share a common folk/pop sound. Since relocating to Victoria, the city has begun to claim Mike as one of its best singer/songwriters. He's performed at a few folk festivals and was a grant recipient of Rawlco Radio's 10K20 grant project. Mike's music is available on iTunes or through his website at www.mike edel.bandcamp.com
