PENNER, Alvena Megli

Alvena Penner

Alvena Megli Penner passed away February 18, 2017 at Westpark Lodge, Red Deer, AB at the age of 95 years. Alvena was born at Sunnyslope, AB on June 10, 1921, the first child of Lewis and Ida Megli. She grew up loving the hills that surrounded her farm home near the Kneehill Creek, loving the company and friendship of the nine siblings who followed her. After leaving school Alvena lived in Coaldale, AB while studying Pattern Drafting and Tailoring, skills that served her well when her daughters were growing up. She also studied at Mountainview Bible College in Didsbury and Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills, continuing her lifelong interest in learning. Alvena was employed at the Linden Co-op when she met Wilbert Penner. Wilbert and Alvena were married in Linden on March 26, 1949, beginning 55 years of love and friendship. They soon moved to Three Hills, establishing a home, a Chiropractic practice and a family. Alvena’s work as full-time homemaker and mother of three daughters was made even busier by her other full-time work, receptionist for Dr. Wilbert’s in-house office. The family always enjoyed summer camping vacations. After their daughters were grown, “Empty Nesters” Alvena and Wilbert began a new style of travel: RV road trips throughout Western Canada, USA, and Alaska. Alvena enjoyed the changing landscapes, interesting towns and the variety of people with whom she spoke. She would often bake muffins in the RV as a treat for new friends in neighboring campsites. She loved the creativity of baking, especially with yeast dough, and decorating cakes for family birthdays. Alvena and Wilbert retired to Linden in 1995, moving closer to Church and extended family. They played harmonica duets and hundreds of Scrabble games, hosted many guests, and took frequent drives, keeping a look-out for deer and foxes. Alvena always loved a visit to the family farmstead and her beloved old hills. After her dear Wilbert’s death in July 2004, Alvena faced the challenges of widowhood with courage, spirit and prayer. She resolved to remain in her home for one year just to prove to herself that she could do it. She then moved to the Linden Lodge where she loved the Sunday church services – gathering with her lodge-mates, singing familiar hymns and hearing The Message that had sustained her throughout her life. Since 2011 Alvena lived in Red Deer’s Westpark Lodge. Thank you to the “Cottage” staff for their warm, generous, loving care and friendship. Thank you as well to Dr. Erin Thompson. Alvena Megli Penner: A woman who loved God, loved and respected His world and the people living in it.
