MCDONALD, Gordon Carson

Gordon McDonald

Gordon Carson McDonald (Gordie) was born on June 4, 1945 to Norman and Ruby McDonald, the youngest of 4 children born in Spirit River, Alberta. Gordie completed all of his education in Spirit River, grades 1-12. He grew up with a great love for school sports, basketball, track, softball and hockey. Gordie worked various jobs but settled into working his way up at the local grocery store in Spirit River. He married the love of his life, Emmy Metz, on August 15th, 1969. November 26th, 1972 they welcomed their first child, a son, Kenneth Gordon. In May of 1975 Debra Lynn entered the world stillborn and was laid to rest. This led to a life changing decision, Gordie accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior in the fall of 1975. To their joy Deborah Ann was born October 24th, 1976 as a precious gift from God. Gordie, Emmy and their children lived in Spirit River until the spring of 1980 when they answered a call to fill a need. The call led them to Three Hills where he took up the position of meat cutter in the old PBI butcher shop. He worked as meat cutter and then staff store manager until 1988 when the store was closed. In 1988 he accepted a position as the meat cutter at the Food Cellar. In 1990 he went back on staff at Prairie as the Director of Food Services and served there until 1998. At this time Gordie and Emmy went to Uganda with AIM to serve as support/service staff running the guest house. After serving there for 3 years, they returned to Three Hills in Dec. of 2001 and Gordie started in the post office/copy services at PBI in April 2002 and served faithfully until he retired in April of 2014. He is remembered by many for his faithful service, ready smile (his peppermints) and for being helpful to any who needed it. January 26 of this year, Gordie was diagnosed with tongue cancer. February 27th he underwent a massive surgery to remove the cancer followed by 30 radiation treatments. Through it all, Gordie wanted to beat the cancer and he maintained such a positive outlook. He had peace. He wanted God to be glorified. August 11th we got the report that Gordie's cancer had returned aggressively with no earthly treatment. August 25th, just after 9pm in the Three Hills Hospital he peacefully met his Lord and Saviour. Gordie was predeceased by his parents Norman and Ruby, his infant sister Catherine and his daughter Debra. He will be missed by his loving wife of 48 years Emmy, his son Kenneth Gordon (Candace), daughter Deborah Ann (Craig) his brothers Doug (Lesley) and Don (Pat), numerous nephews and nieces and his seven grandchildren Brandon, Dylan, Chase, Ruby-Ann, Andrew, Emilia and Aaron. The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses, medical staff and specialists that helped treat dad and guided us along this journey. The care from Dr. Joubert and the many nurses in the Palliative Unit in Three Hills was an amazing blessing. Thank you. Our many friends in the community who expressed their love in word and deed, our family who have helped out, and our church family at PTC who's prayers and support were felt over the months and especially in the last days, thank you. We can not imagine going through this journey without the great hope we have in Jesus. Memorial donations may be made to Prairie Bible Institute or to the PTC Building Fund.
