Marlene Frere

September 21, 1960 – February 22, 2018 - Marlene was born in Three Hills, Alberta to Ben and Lorraine Maerz, Sr. She grew up on the family farm west of Three Hills. Marlene was active in 4-H Sewing, music, sports and received many awards and scholarships through her school years. Marlene graduated from Three Hills High School in 1978. She went on to Red Deer College and graduated in May 1980 with an Education Diploma. She then transferred to University of Alberta and graduated two years later in 1982 with a Bachelor of Education with Distinction. During her teaching career she taught at Edmonton Catholic School Division (Edmonton), Three Hills School Division (Linden, Torrington), Golden Hills School Division (Trochu Valley School (1985-2012)), Wild Rose School Divisions (Rocky Mountain House) and was currently employed by Pembina Hills Public Schools (Alberta Distance Learning Centre as English marker).Marlene had a joy for life, shoes, loved to travel, ran marathons, published her first book “My Heart Burns” and recently signed a three book deal which will be published later this year. Marlene’s greatest joy in life was her family and especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her sons, Tanner (Martha) and Dryden (Stephanie) and her grandchildren, Mya and Bryson (Tanner). She is also survived by her mother, Lorraine Maerz, her siblings Lorraine (Ken) MacLean and Stephen (Desiree) Maerz and her niece, Veronika MacLean. She was predeceased by her father, Ben Maerz, her brothers, Ben and Casey Maerz. Honorary Pallbearers are: Clare Stankievech, Joanne Tolman, Judy Downey, Wendy Niemi, Joanne Johnson and Nicole Giberson (New Brunswick). We would like to thank the staff at the Red Deer Hospital Unit 32 and the Red Deer Hospice Society for the wonderful care and compassion that they had shown Marlene. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 2:00 pm from the Three Hills Community Center.
