YOUNG, Helen Anne

Helen Young

Helen Anne Young passed away in Red Deer, Alberta on September 14, 2018 at the age of 81. She was born on August 26, 1937 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Dorothy and David Elder (who passed away when she was nine months old). Helen’s early years were spent in Winnipeg. She moved to Three Hills, Alberta after Dorothy (Doad) married Adam (Duke) Young. She grew up here and attended Three Hills School and then went on to university where she earned a Teaching Certificate. Later she went on to receive her Bachelor of Education Degree. Helen’s teaching career began in Champion, Alberta and then to Wetaskiwin, Alberta for several years. Eventually she went to Bowness, Alberta and then to Calgary where she continued her career until she retired. She mainly taught Grade One and Two (also Grade Five for a while). After she retired she volunteered at the Calgary schools tutoring. She often boasted - rightly so - that she had taught many a child to read. Helen loved to travel. Her first trip was on an oceanliner across the Atlantic to England and beyond. She had the bug! Touring places in Africa, India, Russia, Argentina, China and Mexico, she always came back with interesting tales to tell about her journeys. Her go-to place and favourite was England. Helen loved to read. She had a large collection of books with all the Best Sellers. Sharing her books and revenues was an avid pastime. Another interest of hers was horse racing as her grandfather in Ontario had thoroughbred stables. A big fan of the Blue Jays, she continued to watch all the ball games. Helen walked everywhere! She was always up for a good debate and spent many hours discussing education and political issues. Helen enjoyed a good joke. She was very meticulous in her tastes in shoes, clothing, furniture, and home decor. Very classy! She delighted in hearing stories of her nieces and nephews. She never missed a birthday or Christmas gift. Helen was determined, independent classy, loyal and a bit stubborn! Helen is survived by her sister Shauna Fenton and her brother-in-law Jack Fenton. Also by her nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews: Reid and Patty Fenton (Braden, Lucas, Bryce); Kelly and Troy Frere (Tyson, Ryan, Owen); Johnny and Randi Fenton (Abby, Grace); Murray Fenton and Cindy Jantz; Chrissy and Cody Ferguson (Nolan, Cooper, Dashel). Funeral Services will be held at the Knox United Church in Three Hills on September 21 at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Margaret Lang officiating.
