DOBSON, Iris Annabell

DOBSON - Iris Annabell Dobson was born in Innisfail, Alberta, on December 12th, 1915 to William James and Annie Melissa (nee Jacobs) Pendergast. Iris arrived earlier than expected, so had to stay in the hospital for a while, but after several weeks was welcomed home by her parents and her three sisters, Verna, Lena, and Hazel, and her brother, Lloyd. In September 1920, Lloyd passed away, and in January 1921, when Iris was only five, her mother passed away. Later, her father was united in marriage to Viola Buckler, and Ken, Bill, and Lorna were born. At age eleven, Iris received the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior, was baptized and sought to live for Him. In her teen years she lived in Mirror, AB with her sister and brother-in-law, Verna and Kenneth Jardine, where she helped in their home, in their watch repair and jewelry store, in Sunday School, and in Schoolhouse evangelism. Desiring to learn more of God's Word, and challenged by speakers she had heard at conferences, she went to Prairie Bible Institute. She sang in choirs and ensembles, and also sang solos for Prairie's radio broadcast. She taught Ladies' Sunday School classes to other Bible School students. While a student, she worked in the library and assisted teachers by correcting assignments. After graduation in 1941, she served on staff until the spring of 1948, working in the library - part of the time as librarian, in the music department, in the printing department where she set type and did proof reading, and in the correspondence department where she corrected lessons. Iris had a great desire to see others come to know God and receive salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ. She planned to go to the mission field, and began to learn Spanish, but because of poor health, she joined her family in Lacombe. Along with others, she helped with the church Ken and Verna Jardine had begun there. In the summer, people of the area were involved with what is now Camp Silversides at Gull Lake, AB. It was there that she was introduced to Stanley Dobson from Dodsland, SK area, who had begun farming west of Lacombe. They were happily united in marriage on December 11th, 1948. Iris was now a homemaker and a farmer's wife! She worked hard at everything she did. She learned to garden and enjoyed the countryside - especially the flowers and the birds. Then along came Beryl, Elaine, and Neil. Iris was a loving, caring mother, putting everyone ahead of herself. At church she played the piano, sang special music numbers, and taught Sunday School – especially the teen class. After retirement Stan and Iris spent 16 winters in Phoenix and Mesa, Arizona, spending their summers in Blackfalds. From 1996 to June 2006, they resided in Linden, AB, and on June 1st, 2006 they took up residence in the Golden Hills Lodge in Three Hills, AB. Stanley now resides in the Continuing Care Wing of the Three Hills Hospital. Stan and Iris had their 62nd Wedding Anniversary this past December. Iris went to be with her Lord, January 20th, 2011. Iris will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Stanley William Dobson of Three Hills, AB; by her daughters, Beryl (Dennis) Siemens and children, Tammy, Nathan, and Kevin, of Prince Albert, SK; Elaine Dobson of Three Hills, AB; Neil (Irene) Dobson and children, Lyndon, Cassandra, and Ashley, of Three Hills, AB; also by sisters, Hazel Buckler of Drayton Valley, AB, Lorna (Henry) Neufeld, of Lacombe, AB; brother, William (Phyllis) Pendergast, of Edmonton, AB; also by sister-in-law, Doris Pendergast, and Stan's sisters-in-law, Joyce Dobson, and Irene Dobson; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Iris was predeceased by her parents, William and Annie Pendergast; her step mother, Viola Pendergast; sisters, Verna (Kenneth) Jardine, Lena (Willard) Bennett; and brothers, Lloyd Pendergast, and Kenneth Pendergast; and brother-in-law Wallace Buckler. Memorial services were held Friday, January 28, 2011 at Mount Olive Evangelical Free Church, Three Hills, Alberta. Memorial Donations may be made to Prairie Bible Institute or Charity of Choice. Condolences may be sent to Arrangements in care of SUNSET FUNERAL SERVICE ltd Linden, Alberta. 403-546-3903.
