Ellen Boles

Ellen Boles passed away at the Three Hills District Health Care Centre on January 4, 2019 at the age of 91 years. Ellen, born on the family farm SE of Trochu November 28, 1927, was the daughter of Henry and Anni Kaatiala. She attended Turtle School before the family moved back to Finland. Six months later they left Finland in November 1939 returning to Canada on the last ship, six days before the war in Finland broke out. On their return Ellen attended Three Hills Ridge School. They then moved to their new farm SE of Trochu where she attended Greenleaf School. Ellen married Foster Boles on June 21, 1951. They lived on their farm NW of Three Hills where Ellen continued to live until October, 2017 when she moved to the Golden Hills Lodge. Foster and Ellen had two daughters: Shirley Ann (Darrel) Adam and Louise Marie Boles, granddaughter, Crystal (Mark) Keller and their children Desirae and Dominic of Brennan Creek, BC. Ellen was a 50 year member of the Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed reading all of her life and was well versed on current events both locally and internationally. Her major interest was all kinds of history. She loved to travel. Foster and Ellen drove all over North America seeing many places they had read about. Later she and her friend, Margaret Nielsen enjoyed many bus trips together and a trip to New Zealand and Australia. Ellen was predeceased by her husband Foster in 1997 and daughter Louise in 2014. Ellen was proud of her Finnish Heritage. Ellen was the last person fluent in Finnish that lived in the Finnish Community of the Finns at Trochu. A final page turned in the history of the community. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday January 9, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Knox United Church, Three Hills. Memorial donations may be made to the Kneehill Historical Society or STARS.
