MANTEL, James S.

Jim Mantel

1937 - 2019 - Jim was born in Andyk, the Netherlands in December 1937, the sixth child in a family of seven. When he was very young the Netherlands was invaded by Germany and his family experienced the occupation. They emigrated to Canada in 1949 and bought a farm near Hamilton, Ontario where they grew produce and flowers. When Jim was 14 his Dad took him out of school to help on the farm. By the time he was 16 he was selling flowers on Toronto Wholesale Market. That was also the year he attended a Billy Graham rally and met Jesus and took him into his heart. That created a call to the ministry for Jim. When he was 20 he went to high school, finished in 2 years and went on to four years at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and another 3 years at Calvin Seminary (of the Christian Reformed Church). He married Louise Haan after his first year of Seminary, and together they served in the ministry for 32 years. He retired at 61, came to Three Hills and created Jim’s Garden Centre. It combined his loves for growing and selling and gave him, as he put it, “a reason to get out of bed in the morning.” He worked in his garden right up until his last week. Jim is survived by his loving wife Louise, daughter Kathleen (Tanner, Kendra and Zack), son Timothy, daughter Sara (son-in-law Dean, children: Gareth and Anneke) and son Geoffrey (daughter-in-law Cindy, daughters: Katherine and Kimberley.) Also by two sisters and many nephews and nieces. We will all miss him, but we feel at peace knowing that he is with Jesus and the Father. A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, October 5, at 2 p.m. in Mount Olive Church. All are welcome. Kneehill Funeral Services, Three Hills, entrusted with arrangements 403-443-5111.
