CHESHIRE, Mary Elizabeth (Betty)

Betty Cheshire

September 3, 1917 - December 12, 2019~Betty was born in Bodfari, North Wales at home and raised at the Roberts’ family farm, Hendre. The youngest child of Thomas Huxley and Jane (Lloyd) Roberts, Betty attended Howell’s all girls’ school in Denbigh, Denbighshire. After her mother passed at an early age, Betty became a wonderful help to her Dad, learning to cook, clean and help on the farm, where they raised sheep, milk cows, field horses, sheep dogs and pigs. Betty’s love of animals continued throughout her life. During the war, a young Canadian flight lieutenant, Allen Joel Cheshire, travelled to Hendre with Stan Armstrong to visit the Roberts family, who were cousins to his Elnora friends. Joe and Betty began a courtship with war time dances and picture shows; a difficult time for her father, knowing his only daughter was falling for the handsome Canadian. Betty and Joe were married in Bodfari on September 21, 1942 and lived their first few years on bases where Joe was stationed which included: Ireland, Plymouth, and South Hampton. In 1946, along with many other war brides, Betty sailed on the Mauretania II with two year old Lloyd and three month old Carol to Canada, arriving via Pier 21 in Halifax. Joe and Betty settled on the family farm north of Elnora and welcomed three more children, Shelly, Linda and Kerry. While Betty was very comfortable working hard milking the cows, gardening and cooking, it was also important that her hair and makeup were just right, her look always complete with a string of pearls and a lovely purse. Through the years, she had a great love for family, friends, dogs, flowers, shopping, reading and baking - her biscuits were the very best! Betty was predeceased by her brothers, Lloyd and Llew; daughter, Linda; son-in-law, Gordie Machell; sister-in-law Roberta Goddard; and husband, Joe. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Lloyd (Audrey) Cheshire, Carol (Al) Robertson, Shelly and Kerry Cheshire; three grandchildren, Laura Lee Machell-Cunningham (Ken Cunningham), Larry and Corey (Lisa) Cheshire; great-grandchildren Hannah (Kevin) Smyth, Connor and Max Cunningham, Cooper, Chloe and Maille Cheshire; one great-great-granddaughter, Sawyer Elizabeth Smyth (five generations) and very special friends Ken and Lilas Stratford. A celebration of Life was held on Wed., Dec. 18, 2019 at the Elnora Community Center, Elnora, AB. Kneehill Funeral Services, Trochu, entrusted with arrangements 403-442-2123.
