William Friesen

William Friesen was born on Feb. 10, 1928 in the Mennonite community of Waldheim, Saskatchewan to Henry D. Friesen and Anna (Bergen) Friesen. He was the youngest of 16 children. William (Bill) was born again in March 1947. That fall he attended Prairie Bible Institute. While he was there, he met Lois Maxwell. In October 1953 they traveled to Japan together as single missionaries. During language school they were engaged. They were married on July 26, 1955 in Karuizawa, Japan. Bill and Lois served as career missionaries for 43 years - first with Japan Evangelical Mission and then with The Evangelical Alliance Mission. During Bill’s time in Japan he was involved in a variety of ministries including radio work, churching planting, English teaching and mission administration. Bill and Lois’ four daughters (Hannah, Lily, Esther and Mary) were born in Japan. Bill and Lois retired in Three Hills, Alberta in 1994. Bill spent a number of years helping seniors at Prairie Tabernacle Congregation. He also enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. Bill and Lois opened their home to many friends and relatives. Bill continued to keep in contact with the work in Japan. He made eight trips back to Japan during his retirement to help with various projects. In 2018 Bill moved to the Chateau. In 2019 he moved to Three Hills’ Extended Care. He passed away in his sleep early in the morning of Feb. 5, 2020, five days short of his 92nd birthday. Bill is predeceased by all his brothers and sisters and his daughter Lily. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Lois, his daughters Hannah, Esther (Tim) and Mary, grandsons Jordan, Jonathan, Joel and Michael, a number of brothers and sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews. as well as many friends in Canada, USA and Japan. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 21 at 2:00 pm at the Prairie Tabernacle. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Prairie Tabernacle building fund.
