VERT-HAZEL, Florence

Florence Vert Hazel

Florence was born February 7, 1931 to Tom and Ethel Thompson in Vermilion, Alberta. Life on the farm with no electricity or running water was difficult, but there was still time for fun – ice-skating and tobogganing in winter and picnics in summer.

In 1948, Florence married Joseph Vert and eventually moved to Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills, Alberta. Two children were adopted; Janice in 1958, and Dan in 1961. The Vert household welcomed many guests into their home over the years. Bible School students from around the world found the Vert home to be their ‘home away from home.’ Florence was a consummate hostess and enjoyed serving delicious meals and lending a helping hand wherever needed.

Joe and Florence stayed at Prairie until Joe’s retirement. They loved to travel and were able to go on quite a few trips. After Joe’s death in 1991, Florence found companionship and love once again with Gerry Hazel. They married in 2002 and continued to travel and enjoy their lives together until Gerry’s death in 2007.

In December of 2014, during a visit to Abbotsford, Florence had a fall which left her unable to walk. She moved into Menno Hospital and quickly made new friends among the residents and staff. She loved games and activities, good food, and texting on her smart phone! She was a woman of deep faith which sustained her until the end when she passed peacefully to be with the Lord she loved and served.
