It is with great sadness that the family of Demetre (Jim) Economou announce his passing on September 2, 2020 at the age of 86 years. Jim was born in Erithre, Greece on December 22, 1933 and immigrated to Canada in 1951. For many years Jim ran a successful pizzeria, JayJay Pizza in Calgary. If you had a chance to peek back into the kitchen, you could often spot Jim’s grandchildren learning how to make pizzas. Jim loved sports, a good cup of coffee, spending time with his friends and, most of all, his family. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Jim often play chauffeur, taking his daughter to figure skating practise or music lessons and never missed an important moment. In later years, he paid the same attention to his grandchildren and was in the stands for many hockey games and equestrian competitions.

Jim will forever be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and sense of humor. Jim is survived by his daughter Katherine (Ivan) Shapka, his grandchildren Stephania (James) Desmarais, Niko (Laura) Vlismas, Demetra (Gary) Kinsey and his four great-grandchildren, Justus and Maximus Desmarais and Owen and Elias Kinsey. Jim is also survived by his sister Eftehia and brother Chris in Greece. He was predeceased by his wife Helene, and by a brother John and sister Tasia.
