BINET, Marla Sharon (nee Ochenrider)

Marla Binet

March 21, 1939 - November 18, 2020

Marla was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on March 21, 1939 to William Ochenrider and Elaine (Litzinger) Ochenrider, and was joined in later years by two brothers, Ryan and Scott. She spent her childhood in Pennsylvania, leaving after High School to attend business school in Florida. After completing her degree, she travelled to Three Hills, Alberta to attend Prairie Bible College in 1960. There, along with making many life-long friends, she met her future husband, and the love of her life, John Binet. They were married in Pennsylvania in 1965, and then returned to Prairie for John to work as staff. Marla, herself, started working at Prairie after John’s death in 1988. She loved her work in the Registrar’s office and then in the High School office. She finally had the opportunity to use the skills she had acquired many years before and was an excellent and praised assistant to the people she worked for. But more than that work, Marla loved the people that she worked with. She lovingly served her coworkers, and adopted the staff and students around her as her own family. In fact, over the years at Prairie, Marla welcomed a remarkable amount of people into her home, for everything between a single meal and a year-long stay.

Marla loved the Savior that reached out and took hold of her at an early age, and was faithful and devoted to Him, unwaveringly, throughout her life. The example she set was one of steady belief and patience in times when she couldn’t see ahead, and warm and tender communion in her days of joy and peace. Marla was an exceptional wife, mother and grandmother. Her faithful and constant care always provided a safe place for her family, both physically and emotionally. Her enduring belief in the people she loved was a hallmark of her. She was an abiding and steadfast friend. Marla passed away peacefully on November 18, 2020 in the Three Hills hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Elaine, and her husband John. Marla is survived by her brothers, Scott and Ryan, of Johnston, PA, as well as her sons: John of Edmonton, AB and Douglas of Okotoks, AB and her daughter Julie of Medicine Hat. She will also be fiercely missed by her twelve grandchildren and her great-grandson, as well as her adopted daughter, son and grandson: Ranae, Sean and Milo Dalgetty. The family would like to thank all of the wonderful staff who cared for Marla so kindly at the Three Hills Lodge, the wonderful staff of HomeCare, and the nurses that took such loving care of her during her last days. Those wishing to make a donation in lieu of flowers may donate to Hellenic Ministries, at hellenicministries.org. Marla has been praying for the Macris’s (the founders of the mission) since she was a student at Prairie. A celebration of life was held on Monday, November 23, 2020.
