Art was born in Ulvenhout, Holland to John and Corrie Luijkx. He was the third child of eight. In 1953, at the age of 12, Art and his family immigrated to Canada, where they first settled in the Bluffton-Rimbey, AB area.

John Boxma was born in Meedhuizen, Groningen in Holland, on May 27, 1934. He grew up in various farming communities in the Delfzyl area of Holland.
