On Friday, November 12, the PCA Junior High Girls Sabres volleyball team earned the gold medal and zone banner at the South Central 2J Zone Volleyball tournament held in Bassano. This finished off a very successful season for this group of girls. Throughout the fall they attended four tournaments, earning 2nd place at Red Deer College, 3rd place at Olds College, the consolation plaque at Spruce Grove, and 1st place at their home tournament. At the end of the league season they were first in the standings, and during the first two weeks of November not only won the qualifying tournament to allow them to proceed to 2J Zones but also the divisional championship.

The Zone tournament began on Thursday afternoon with a relatively easy match versus Hugh Sutherland from Carstairs. All matches at Zones were best of three, but the Sabres were able to win their first match in two sets. Their next match, vs. Notre Dame from High River, was more difficult, and though they took the first set they lost the next two. Friday morning saw the team face Hanna, and though the Sabres' previous experience with a morning game had not been at all successful this time they got on the court ready to play, winning again in two sets. A three-way tie for first in their pool meant seeding had to be done by the ratio of sets won and lost, and the Sabres came out in first place. This meant a six-hour wait until the semi-finals, which took place vs. Bassano at 4:00. Bassano was a strong serving and defensive team, but they did not use their strong middle attack much in this set, so the Sabres managed to beat them in two sets; at one point in the second set the Sabres were behind 22-15, but were able to stay mentally tough and earn one point at a time to finish with a 25-23 victory. The final match was against Notre Dame again, the team they'd lost to in the round-robin. This was a team with some very hard servers and a strong power attack in all rotations, so the girls knew they would have to work hard to beat them. The Sabres served and passed well, kept their attack strong, and once again were able to pull off a victory in just two sets.

Congratulations to the Sabres for the hard work and dedication of every player on the team! And congratulations also to the Three Hills Jr. High Girls for earning the bronze! The first and third standings at this tournament are a wonderful testimony to the quality of both athletes and coaches in this division as well as to the club volleyball program run at PBI through the winter months. Good luck to both teams next year!
