Acme's Senior Boys returned from the 1A Volleyball Zone Tournament as 2010 Zone Champions.
The eight-team tournament was held in Bassano, with Acme winning 10-0, defeating Standard, Bassano, and Duchess in round-robin play, Olds Koinonia Christian in the semi-final, and Rosemary in the final.
It was in 2007 that the Acme Senior Boys last brought home the banner. During season play this 2010 team defeated Three Hills and Prairie Christian Academy for Divisionals, followed by Regionals and Zones. Acme won tournaments in both Bentley and Carstairs, and placed second in Medicine Hat, and third in Vulcan and Strathmore Tournaments.
The boys will be looking to bring home the provincial banner in volleyball this coming weekend in Taber at St. Mary's School, a hope that hasn't been fulfilled since 1982. Game times will be posted on the school website at: www.acmeschool.ca
This senior team is considered young with three Grade 12 students, six in Grade 11, and one in Grade 10. The team roster includes Riley Keet, Luke Rauwerda, Ryan Kung, Colby Reimer, Rob Toews, Joel Ratzlaff, Blake Penner, Taylor Klassen, and Patrick and Anthony Woodlands, with coaches Murray and Justin Huddle.
Acme Zone results
Acme teams had great success across the board with three silver medals for Junior Varsity Girls, JV Boys, and Senior Girls. The JV Girls lost to Three Hills in their final; JV Boys lost to Strathcona Tweedsmuir in the finals and the Sr. Girls were defeated by Standard in the Zone finals at Rosemary. With 40 students playing on the four teams this season, "that," said Coach Huddle, "encompasses nearly 50% of Acme School's entire varsity student body, and the future looks good for the program in 2011."
