Elnora Eagles attend Little League Softball Nationals in Victoria

Elnora Eagles Victoria

The Elnora Peewee Eagles are home from Little League Nationals in Victoria, ending an exciting and memorable softball season. Their first year playing in both the Alberta / Saskatchewan GPLS B league and Little League Canada's Major Softball League, the "little Eagles" were happy to be challenged and were dedicated to learning and continually developing these past five months. Season highlights were many: travelling to Coach Al's hometown of Unity, Saskatchewan for the League Championship, defeating our Red Deer rivals to win a bronze medal at provincials, hosting two tournaments in Elnora, spending time with the team and, best of all, travelling to Victoria for Little League Nationals! On August 2, the Eagles flew to Victoria as a team, feeling quite famous at the airport representing Alberta in the white cowboy hats that Little League provided them with. The girls won one out of four games, earning a bronze medal, and winning the Joe Shea Sportsmanship Award and the team skills competition. Early in the tournament, they defeated Victoria's Hampton team, the team that ended up winning the national title. The BC teams welcomed our small town girls, praised their good manners, attitudes and friendliness, and proudly wore the "I Love Elnora" pins and cowboy hats they were given by the team.

During the evenings, there was time for the girls to take in the beauty of Victoria. Within an hour of arriving at their hotel, the girls had their feet in the nearby ocean, exploring, collecting shells and holding crabs! They enjoyed dinner by the sea, the Parliament Buildings lit up at night, Hatley Castle and discovering hermit crabs, sea anemones and starfish at the beach. Some of the girls caught a glimpse of seals and sea otters, and most families rode the water taxi to Fisherman's Wharf. The night life near the harbour was an experience for these small town girls! Truly, the players, coaches, and families will never forget their five days in Victoria. Thank you so much to all our friends and family who showed their support throughout the season. From cheering the team on at games and volunteering during home tournaments, to donating money to help with travel expenses , diamond upkeep, and equipment, the support received is all so very appreciated. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to Pine Cliff Energy, Kneehill County, the Town of Trochu, the Town of Three Hills, and the Village of Elnora who each generously donated money to assist with the expenses associated with nationals. We share of a love of this great game, and can't wait for next season!
