Thrashers wrap up 2018/19 season home games

Thrashers Ponoka Final 2019

The Thrashers wrapped up this season’s home games this week as they welcomed the Red Deer Vipers on Tuesday January 29th, and the Ponoka Stampeders on Saturday February 2nd. On Friday February 1st the team was in Airdrie where they fell to the Techmation Thunder, with a score of 22-2.

When Red Deer came to town, the Thrashers were able to hold the Vipers to a 4-1 score after two periods, however the third proved to be a challenge for the Thrashers. When the buzzer sounded the score was 10-1 for Red Deer. The score did not reflect the Thrashers play however, as they fought hard and their defense was strong against a tough opponent. Reid Money, in goal for only his second game this season, faced a whopping 70 shots from the Vipers, while Justin Travis in the other net saw only 18. The Thrashers goal was scored by Tanner Sharp, from Sam Vanderstoop and Kyle Gray.

On Saturday the Thrashers fared far better, setting the lead in the game first with an unassisted beauty from Cale Severtsen at 4:54, then another, this time by Sam Vanderstoop with assistance from Tanner Sharp and Benett Kary at 13:34. However, the Stampeders would answer with a power-play goal at 15:20, a cross-ice pass into an open net. Carroll made a big breakaway save with 1:21 left in the game, but a slashing penalty would ensue on that play. For the remainder of the period the Thrashers fought hard, Ponoka in their end ferociously seeking a goal with a man advantage. Unfortunately with 25 seconds left in the period the Stampeders tied it up, and the Thrashers would never regain the lead.

At 7:32 of the second period Ponoka would go top-shelf, but the Thrashers would answer at 9:20 with a short-handed five-hole goal scored by Alex Little from Marshall Wilson and Tanner Sharp. With just five minutes left in the second, Carroll got tied up and Ponoka was able to get one past him, and the period would end with a score of 4-3 for the Stampeders.

The Stampeders came out strong in the third period, but for nearly five minutes Carroll and the Thrashers were able to hold them off. At 4:36 though the Thrashers found themselves short-handed, and a big collision in front of the net created an opening which the Stampeders capitalized on, making the score 5-3. The rest of the period would be rife with penalties to both teams, and the Thrashers found themselves in a 5 on 3 situation with 6:24 to go in the game. A one-timer by Ty Winther from Kevin Schrock and Marshall Wilson would bring the Thrashers within one, with 2:50 of 5 on 4 time remaining. The Thrashers pressed but were not able to tie it up, and the score would remain 5-4 for the Stampeders. Shots were 39-29 in Ponoka’s favour.

The Thrashers will be in action on Friday, February 8 in Stettler to face the Lightning, and again on Sunday February 10 in Blackfalds to take on the Wranglers for their final tilt of the season.
