Linden holds 7th Annual Fishing Derby

Linden Derby 2019 Winners

Linden held its 7th Annual Fishing Derby on Saturday, August 24 and, unlike last year, contestants were actually catching fish. Last year’s event, also sponsored by the Linden and District Agricultural Society, had only one fish caught. Peter Schmaltz was able to catch a 12” fish, but it was the only fish caught throughout that day.

This year, there were 24 total entries, up three from last year, and there were lots of fish caught. Prizes are awarded for the largest fish caught in the three different age categories. In the 12 & under category, Jaxon Klassen won for his 12” trout, Brian Toews won in the 13-17 category with an 11-1/2” trout, and Joe McNaught won in the 18 plus category with a 12” trout. The three winners were each given a gift certificate to be spent in Linden and Joe McNaught also received an Alberta flag, courtesy of Nathan Cooper, MLA, who popped in to see how the fish were biting. Mr. Cooper spoke with a number of the fishermen and had a nice chat with one of the younger ones, James Bruce.

The Linden & District Agricultural Society also supplied hot dogs for all the hungry contestants. “It was a great day and the free hot dogs were very much appreciated,” stated Jane Nason-Zenchuk, organizer.
