Rundle College

Three Hills School and The Royals enjoyed hosting teams from across Alberta for the 2A Girls Provincial Volleyball Championships.

Tournament Co-Chair Michael Vaughan of Three Hills School said, “The weekend was a huge success. It was a weekend of close, competitive volleyball…Rundle College took Gold, Magrath was Silver, Vauxhall was third, St. Augustine was fourth” and the Royals came in fifth.

Vaughan said that “the Royals played really well, going 3-2 in the round-robin to finish third in the pool and make the playoff round.” The only two losses for the Royals in the round-robin came at the hands of Rundle College and Magrath, the teams that would go on to win Gold and Silver. In both of these losses, the Royals came up short by only two points.

The Royals would go on to lose a tight match in the Quarterfinals against St. Augustine. The highlight of the weekend for the Royals, Vaughan says, was “how well they competed against the best teams in the province - especially taking Rundle College (Gold) to a third set”; only one other team was able to do this all weekend.

Vaughan also noted that teams in attendance were impressed with the level of whole-school involvement demonstrated by Three Hills School in the opening ceremonies, as well as the energy created by the ceremonies. Another highlight of the whole weekend was the carnival themed banquet, in which there were games for teams to play, prizes to be won, cotton candy and popcorn to be enjoyed, and a guest speaker to inspire the athletes. Susan Moncks attended the banquet as the guest speaker, who is a member of the Alberta Schools Athletic Association Hall of Fame (2009) for her play with the Calgary Dinos when she was a student, and for coaching Standard School to eight straight 1A Girls’ Volleyball Zone Championships, and seven straight ASAA 1A Girls’ Volleyball Provincial Championships. The theme of her speech was “Playing the Game with Joy.”

Next year’s 2A Girls Volleyball Provincial Championships will be held from November 26-28, 2020 at St. Mary’s School in Taber, AB.
