That's Life - July 26, 2017

Interesting times doesn’t quite sum up the political scene in this great province of Alberta.

With the formation of the United Conservative Party, we bid farewell to what was left of the Progressive Conservative Party and the Wildrose Party.

But now the question - who will lead?

Well, for now, Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills MLA Nathan Cooper has been chosen to serve as Interim Leader. Congratulations, Nathan, on this historic appointment. I have a lot of respect for our MLA. He is everywhere. In the past few weeks he has attended graduations, parades, community church services and anniversary celebrations in Three Hills alone. It’s a good thing he’s a young man with a tremendous amount of energy and sincere dedication to serve.

I took great interest in seeing a picture of former Wildrose Leader Brian Jean sitting next to Ric McIver, former House Leader of the PC’s, during the first meeting of the new United Conservative Party caucus, in Edmonton, on Monday, July 24.

It was at the Alberta Urban Municipalities Convention in September of 2015, when McIver replied, “over my dead body, when asked if he would support a unity agreement between the PC’s and Wildrose. Brian Jean rose to the occasion and planted a kiss on the top of Ric’s head, and the crowd went wild. But that was then.

Soon the gloves will come off as the leadership race begins.

Brian Jean, Jason Kenney, and PC strategist Doug Schweitzer have said they will run for Leader of the new party. The vote for a permanent Leader will be held on October 28, 2017.

So, how will the NDP react to this new Party?

Will they throw a wrench in the works and call an early election? Will then buy their way into another four year term by kicking back all of those Carbon Levy dollars we’re pouring into their coffers? Who knows. Anything is possible.

But one thing is for sure. We can all look forward to some lively, extremely aggressive Town Hall meetings as the leadership candidates hit the road to win our hearts and our votes and, oh yes, to sell memberships to the new Party in Town and that’s the United Conservative Party. Buckle up, it’s going to be a wild ride.

That’s Life.
