That's Life - February 6, 2019

Minus 33 Celsius equals minus 27.4 Fahrenheit. Well, it was minus 33 oC, Tuesday morning, and it made me wonder if any of our school buses were running. A quick check indicated “no buses operating”. When I was a kid that was music to my ears. Oh sure, the school was almost always open but regular classes usually took the form of classroom movies and extra time in the gym.

This kind of cold took me back to my “As The Years Go By” Three Hills history book.

On January 19, 1930 fire destroyed the south side of Main Street between Third and Fourth Avenue. Back then Fahrenheit was used and it was minus 32 oF.

Volunteer firefighters worked through the night to control the blaze. Now remember Three Hills didn’t get running water until 1948. Twenty-two citizens were left homeless that night. Eleven businesses were destroyed.

And remember, in those days folks didn’t know what the forecast was going to be. Back then you simply looked outside and said, “Well, I reckon it’s raining again.” And the person you were talking to replied, “Yep, I reckon.” Simple but to the point.

Congratulations to the Torrington Fire Department for hosting the 60th Annual Alberta Firefighter’s Curling Association Championship Bonspiel. Three Hills and Torrington Curling Rinks were used over the Jan. 30 - Feb. 2 event that saw 21 rinks arrive from throughout the Province. It was only fitting that the Torrington rink of Jeff and Mike Bauer, Ed Look and Stan Martin won top spot. The team will go on to represent Alberta at the Canadian Firefighter Championship in Kelowna, BC running March 22-30, 2019.

This week’s issue presents The Capital’s second annual Valentine’s Contest. This year the theme is “Famous Love Songs”.

There are 20 businesses participating and if you are the lucky winner, you will receive $200 in gift certificates of your choice from participating merchants. Check the layout on pages 10 and 11 of this issue and get your entries in.

Whatever you do, don’t forget Valentine’s Day. Yes, I know, every day is Valentine’s Day around your house. The thing is, it’s not. Do something special for your special someone. You don’t have to spend your life savings, just do something to show your partner that you love them.

That’s Life.
