Outreach News February 23, 2012

Driving can be a source of pleasure, recreation, independence as well as necessity. As we age, driving can become more and more challenging. To help assist seniors in driving safely, we are hosting two information sessions on Tuesday, March 6. The first session is at 10:00 am at the Trochu Seniors Drop-In Centre, and the second is at 1:00 pm at the Silver Willows Drop-In located in Torrington.
In these sessions, Cathy Mantika from the AMA, will be discuss the changing nature of driving as we age, provide opportunities to learn more about age related changes, help you develop strategies to maintain your mobility, and deliver safe driving tips and refresher information.  This is a great learning opportunity to keep you and your loved ones safe on the road. Each presentation will be followed by a short question and answer session to address any additional concerns you may have. Be sure to carpool and bring a friend with you to this great learning opportunity.
For many seniors, driving, particularly in winter, is not an option. Through our volunteers at Seniors Outreach, we are able to offer several alternatives to those needing to get to medical appointments or run other errands.  Our Caring Car program offers seniors in every community in Kneehill County an alternate means of transportation.  The Community Bus offers regular runs around Three Hills on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons so shopping and local appointments can be set for those times. This bus also makes monthly runs to Red Deer as well. Seniors Outreach has been blessed with the addition of a wheelchair accessible bus which is located in Trochu.  For seniors who experience challenges with mobility, this new service will help accommodate your needs.
