Seniors Outreach August 15, 2012

Seniors are so blessed in Alberta to have the excellent Alberta Seniors Benefits program.  No other province in Canada offers such an extensive program.
By now, all seniors should have received their letters stating what their entitlement is for this new benefit year.  If you have not received your letter or are not sure what it entitles you to, don't hesitate to contact our office and we will be glad to help you work through it.
The income thresholds for benefits have increased $500 for single seniors and $800 for couples.
Primary benefits have not changed and still include the following items:
• Appliances such as fridge, stove, washer, dryer;
• Home repairs including furnace, hot water tank, roof, electrical, and plumbing repairs;
• Lift chairs;
• Personal response service such as Lifeline;
• Foot care;
• Prescription expenses over $45 per person a month;
• Medical trip expenses for medical conditions that require numerous trips greater than 100 km round trip (that includes Drumheller, Olds, Red Deer, and Calgary);
• Funeral service expenses.
The one new item is the purchase of a CPAP machine for seniors with severe sleep problems.
Secondary benefits also have not changed and include the following items:
• Small appliances such as microwave, vacuum, television;
• Home repairs for garage roof, eaves, and exterior doors;
• Housekeeping and yard maintenance which includes snow shoveling;
