Seniors Outreach - November 30, 2016

Wow! How did it get to be the end of November? We’ve been busy around Seniors Outreach with bus trips to Rosebud, Festival of Trees, shopping to Red Deer and more events planned in December! Please call our office at 403-443-2555 or stop in for information on upcoming events.
One project for December we are so excited about is the Gifts for Grandparents Program. My colleague Elizabeth Hoppins has spearheaded this program in Kneehill County for two years, in partnership with the Central Alberta Family Services Association in Red Deer. This year we are branching off on our own and our goal is to prepare 30-40 gift bags for seniors to help brighten their Christmas. Christmas is a time of job and celebration but for some seniors it can be a very lonely time in their lives, perhaps with no visitors or family/friends to share Christmas with. This can be an opportunity for us to reach out to our seniors and show them there are people who care!
Last Christmas, 15 seniors in Kneehill County were blessed with gifts from the program. Through the generous donations from Central Alberta businesses and individuals, gift bags were prepared in Red Deer by volunteers, with gift bags containing a variety of personal care products, books, edible goodies, slippers, socks, large print crossword puzzles and other items.
It is easy in a rural community to have the post card Christmas move version of what it looks like to be a senior at Christmas. In reality, we had one client mention that our gift was the only gift received at Christmas. It becomes more than the gift itself, but more of a way to show that someone cares about them and they are remembered at this special time of year. My husband and I delivered the gifts to Three Hills residents dressed up as Santa and Mrs. Claus which was a wonderful but eye opening experience as well.
We are so excited that the Three Hills and Trochu schools have come on board to help us facilitate this project! If anyone in the community is able to help with donations, financial assistance or able to give of your time to help assemble the gift bags, that would be wonderful! Please call our office, email to: lauralee@seniorso.ca or stop by our office! Together we can help to make a difference this Christmas!
