After a five-year hiatus, with the 2020 event being cancelled just three weeks before it was set to take place, the Sportsmen’s Dinner returns for the first time since 2018. Hosted by the Acme Alumni Association, this dinner is a major community fundraising event helping to keep two Alumni buses on the road.
Since 2005, the Acme Alumni Association has served as an official non-profit organization with its first priority being to provide safe, reliable transportation for local athletes and community groups travelling to sporting events in other communities. Proudly owning and operating two buses, the Alumni supports the villages of Acme, Linden, and the surrounding area, including the Tri-Campus Schools of Acme School, Carbon School, and Dr. Elliott School in Linden, Alberta.
The two Alumni buses are booked solid throughout the year. They are highly valued within our communities being used by school athletic programs, community sports associations, local seniors, church groups, service clubs, and educational tours. As such, the Alumni Association will proudly continue to keep these buses serviced and on the road for the entire community’s benefit.
Besides being a safe, reliable form of transportation for all students, these buses offer enormous cost savings to all programs within the Tri-Campus Schools. Using Alumni buses eliminates transportation costs for sports use and greatly reduces the cost of field trips by more than half. Currently, field trips and sports are funded only through student fees and fundraising initiatives. If the schools were to use division transportation, families would be paying much more for the same experiences. The Tri-Campus Schools use the Alumni buses to transport students to many field trip experiences, Elementary swimming lessons, school ski trips, sports games, tournaments, and community excursions at a greatly reduced rate. This school year alone the Alumni has provided transportation for over 30000 km with mileage set to increase significantly as our Acme Senior Girls' team heads to High Level for Provincials in one of our Alumni buses, driven by an alumnus from the Class of '84.
This year’s Sportsmen’s Dinner and Cabaret will have a slightly different format than previous years. The goal is to sell out tickets for the dinner and cabaret. The event will feature raffles and a live auction for various items. As well, backed by popular demand, the “Move The Bus” campaign will allow individuals and companies to donate mileage to be featured on social media throughout the 2023-2024 school year. The Sportsmen's Dinner and Cabaret is an important event for the entire community. For tickets and more details, see the advertisement in this issue of The Capital. The deadline to purchase dinner tickets is Monday, March 20.
The funds raised through the generosity of our families, friends, Acme, Carbon & Dr. Elliott Schools’ employees, suppliers and corporate donors go a long way toward enhancing one of Alberta’s most precious resources….our children. Your contribution is greatly appreciated and will be recognized by the Acme Alumni Association and the Tri-Campus Schools of Acme, Carbon & Dr. Elliott Schools.
