Drumheller RCMP advised that on October 5th and October 6th, 2023, a total of 4 residents of Drumheller and nearby Starland County reported suspected fraudulent phone calls. In each case, the complainants received an automated voice message advising that the message was from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a Critical Incident had occurred, and to press “9” for more information.
In these cases, each complainant did not follow the prompts and called the Drumheller RCMP to report and verify their suspicions of attempted fraud.
Drumheller RCMP has confirmed that all calls were fraudulent in nature and initiated from an unknown phone number. RCMP also confirms that automated messages are not sent by the RCMP in this manner nor to advise of a critical incident concerning a specific person.
Drumheller RCMP suspects other residents have received similar phone calls and urges the public not to follow the prompts and to call their local RCMP to report and verify the validity of the call if in question.
All frauds or fraud attempts can be reported to your local RCMP, local Police Service, or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1.888.495.8501 or through their website at https://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
