PENNER, Robert Leonard

Bob Penner

Bob was born to David & Annie Penner on October 30, 1940, 1/2 mile north of where he passed away in his home on October 11, 2022. Bob and his siblings were the first in the family of that generation to be born in Canada. He grew up the middle child of 7 kids and had a full life on the family farm. He started his schooling at New Hope School, 2 miles north of the farm. In Grade 8 he attended Swalwell School, where he met Edith Giesbrecht for the first time. Bob left school for a year, then went back to finish at the Linden school. In 1958 he started farming full time. He purchased his first land shortly after, and initially farmed with his Dad, David. The winter of 1962/63 he worked oil rigs for extra income. In the spring of 1963, Bob married Edith Giesbrecht, and together they made farming and raising a family their life. Bob and Edith’s children: Bob was born in 1964, Dean in 1966, Earl in 1971 and daughter Karen in 1978. Christmas of ‘64 Bob had to sell a cow to buy Christmas presents. This was something he always talked about. Bob & Edith didn’t holiday very much in the early years, as they were very busy building the farm in that time. In 1993, Bob & Edith started spending some time in Arizona in the winter months, while the boys started taking on day-to-day management of the farm. They spent more time there each year, and eventually bought a house in Yuma. Even though he enjoyed Arizona, Bob called home frequently to make sure things were running smoothly without him. By early March, the farmer in him said it was time to high tail it home. Bob took part in many local brandings in the spring, he attended various auction sales, and enjoyed his tenure as Acme Feeder Association supervisor and director. In 2015 Bob’s health started to fail and they quit going south. They enjoyed spending time with family and friends, always making time for visits from grandkids and eventually great grandkids. He was very proud of his entire family and the lives they had built for themselves. He ran combine full time until 2020, and still swathed and continued various farm duties right up until 6 weeks ago. Bob is survived by his wife Edith of 59 years; sons Bob (Debbie), Dean (Kim) and Earl (Tamara); daughter Karen (Tyler); brothers Lloyd (Laura), Jerry (Mildred) and Ernie (Claudette); sisters-in-law Lil Penner and Jeanette Giesbrecht; and brother-in-law Gil Giesbrecht (Wilma).
