1939 – 2023
Pat (Patrick) Sarsfield, 83, of Calgary, peacefully passed away on Jan 4, 2023. Pat was born on November 26, 1939 to Thomas Patrick Sarsfield and Gwendoline Rose Ferraby in Scunthorpe, England. Pat attended Our Lady’s Convent (1945-1949), Henderson Avenue Junior School (1949-1951) then progressed to Scunthorpe Technical High School (1951-1956). He worked as an apprentice draftsman at Hornsby and Goodwin Engineering (1956-1960). Once qualified, Pat advanced working for several companies and creating his own company Mec-Han. In 1957, Pat met Mary Mapplebeck on Scunthorpe High Street and asked her out. Pat and Mary were married on June 1, 1961. They went on to have five children, Richard, Rebecca, Patrick, Catherine and James. They lived in several homes in North Lincolnshire and Scotland raising their family. Due to the economic climate in England in May 1980 Pat went to Vancouver Canada to work. Mary, Patrick and Catherine followed, moving to Calgary in October originally intending to stay for two years leaving Richard and Rebecca with their grandparents in England. They liked Canada and immigrated in 1982 with Rebecca joining. In 1985 they became Canadian Citizens. Pat worked several years in Ft. McMurray progressing from Designer to Engineering Project Manager. Sadly, Mary lost her fight with cancer in 1993. In 1996 Pat met Catherine at work and started dating on a dare. They married on July 12, 1997 and went on to have two sons James and Joe. Traveling became a passion for Pat which started with Mary visiting Mexico City, Acapulco, Disney California, Paris, Pisa, Rome, New York, Argentina, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, continuing with Catherine to Hawaii, Chile, France, beaches in Mexico, US, England, Scotland, Wales. Later he continued his traveling through YouTube. Pat enjoyed fencing, skiing, snooker/pool, love of history, learning/studying, reading, visiting with family. He also had a knack for reading every plaque in every museum he visited. Pat was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Gwendoline, son James Edward (infant) and first wife Mary. He is survived by his second wife Catherine and six children; Richard (Leanne), Rebecca (Loran), Patrick, Catherine (Nick), James, and Joe; six grandchildren Hannah, James, Fintan, Thomas, Alex, and Meagan; two great-grandchildren Ava, and Ted. Pat would often end conversations with “Well, On that Note”. So, on that note, Pat will be woefully missed and may he rest in peace. The Funeral Services will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Thursday Jan 12 at 11 am. Located at 10827-24 street SW Calgary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Alberta Cancer Foundation.
