Obit Lois Friesen

Lois Christina (Maxwell) Friesen was born on August 20, 1929, in Three Hills, Alberta to L. E. and Pearl (Plummer) Maxwell. She was the third of seven children. She attended Prairie High School and Bible College. Lois and her sisters sang in a trio, frequently accompanying their father as he travelled, preaching the gospel. During Bible college, she met Bill Friesen and in 1953 they traveled to Japan together as single missionaries. During language school they were engaged and they were married on July 26, 1955 in Karuizawa, Japan. Bill and Lois served as career missionaries for 43 years - first with Japan Evangelical Mission and then with The Evangelical Alliance Mission. During Lois’ time in Japan she spent the majority of her time as a homemaker. From time to time she was involved in a variety of ministries including teaching English, cooking classes and music. Bill and Lois’ four daughters (Hannah, Lily, Esther and Mary) were born in Japan. Bill and Lois retired in Three Hills, Alberta in 1994 where they were actively involved in the Prairie Tabernacle Congregation. Lois enjoyed baking bread, reading, word games, and her African violets. Every evening Lois and Bill would read the Bible together and sing hymns. Over the years they opened their home to many friends and relatives who greatly appreciated their hospitality. In 2018 Lois moved to Three Hills Health Centre - Continuing Care where she lived for the next five years and received excellent care. She passed away early in the morning of December 16, 2023 at the age of 94. Lois is predeceased by her husband Bill, four of her brothers and sisters and her daughter Lily. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Hannah, Esther (Tim) and Mary, grandsons Jordan, Jonathan, Joel and Michael, her sisters Ruth Hartt and Miriam Phibbs, a number of nieces and nephews, as well as many friends in Canada, USA and Japan.
