HAGGARTY, Rita Marion

Rita

HAGGARTY, Rita Marion - The family of Rita Marion Haggarty (Hourihan) mourns her peaceful passing. Rita, the beloved wife of John (Jack) Powell Haggarty, mother, grammie, and great-grammie, passed away at the University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton, Alberta on April 29, 2011.  Rita was born on the Hourihan family farm, in Ghost Pine, east of Three Hills, Alberta on June 24, 1934, the ninth of eleven children.   Her home was a place which provided love and a strong Catholic faith by her parents, Walter and Marion Hourihan (Montague). She attended Manor school for grades 1 – 9, and high school in Drumheller and Three Hills.  She obtained her First Class Honours in Grade 10 Music.  She attended the University of Alberta in Calgary where she received her diploma in Education. She married Jack on August 19, 1959 and together with their family, they lived in Calgary until their recent move to Edmonton in December 2010.  Rita spent a portion of her life teaching elementary grades one and two. After she married, raising a family was indeed her most rewarding focus. She taught each of her five children lessons through her caring actions. Daily she lived as a woman full of grace and faith.  She was happiest spending time with her family.  And she particularly loved family gatherings of all sorts.  She also enjoyed her coffee, saying her daily prayers, playing the piano and baking her famous chocolate chip cookies or her chocolate cake with the caramel icing.  Rita also provided leadership in her church activities, most particularly through the RCIA program.  She also received her fifty year pin from the Catholic Women's League last fall – from Holy Spirit Parish in Calgary – an honour she deeply cherished.  Upon her hour of passing, her husband Jack explained that "Rita not only taught us how to live, but how to die as well".  She will be dearly missed by her five children, Bernie (Brenda Stebner), Helen Anne (Bruce Stewart), John Powell Jr., Marion (David France) and Rita Jacqueline ; and her grandchildren, Stephanie, Stacey, Jeffrey, Chelsea, Katie, Julie, Rachel, Shauna and Kyla, and her great grandson, Joey;  her sisters Marie Kubinec, Theresa (Semon) Faber, Helen (Colin) MacIsaac, Joan (Dave) Ferraro;  her in-laws, Myra Hourihan, Hazel Haggarty, Father Bob Haggarty OMI, Ken and Maxine Haggarty, Raymond and Elaine Haggarty, Lorne and Sharon Haggarty, Maureen Anderson and Terry and Maureen Haggarty. She will also be dearly missed by a 'huge' family network of nieces, nephews, cousins, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, as well as the many friends she has acquired throughout her seventy-six years of life.  She was predeceased by her infant daughter, Mary, her parents (Walter and Marion Hourihan), her in-laws (Willard and Rita Haggarty), her brothers, Frank, Pat, Walter and Joey, two infant siblings and brothers-in-law, Jim Anderson, Don Haggarty, Joe Kubinec. A prayer service will be held on Friday, May 6, 2011 at 7:00 PM. The celebration of her life will be held the next day, Saturday, May 7, 2011, with Mass at 11:00 AM.  Both will be held at St. Anne of the Prairies Church in Trochu, Alberta.  She will return to the country – and most importantly her 'home' on the prairies.  Her final resting place will be St Anne's cemetery on the family plot.  As Rita wrote in her own story published in The Spirit of Ghost Pine, "As I reflect on my roots, the security of home and family, the high standard of values, reflected by the community where I grew up, I know why I am always proud to remember and to relate that I came from the Ghost Pine – Three Hills area". The family is most grateful to the incredible health professionals who have helped her through the years.  Most particularly, Dr Betty McCrae (retired) at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, and the ICU team at the U of A Hospital, particularly Dr Sligl, and nurses Leonard, Sonya, Kim, and Alina. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to World Vision Canada or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are in the care of KneeHill Funeral Services Limited. Expressions of sympathy can be forwarded to the family via kneehillfuneralservices@hotmail.com
