THOMPSON, Donna Marie Bright

Donna Marie Bright Thompson (1945- 2011) of Three Hills, Alberta passed away on June 7, 2011, in the Three Hills Continuing Care from a long struggle with Pick's Disease.  Donna was born March 30, 1945, in Edmonton to Mary Pylatuk of Clair SK and Frank Gorski of Minneapolis MN.  In July 1945 Donna was placed in the home of Vera and Wes Bright of Stettler AB and in 1946 was officially adopted by them. The Bright home was indeed a bright, fun-loving household with music being one of the main characteristics. Donna's father taught her life-long appreciation for fine music, and her mother taught her the practical skills to make a life and a home beautiful.  With four daughters in the Bright house there were lots of friends coming and going—both girls and boys. In 1967 Donna graduated from Prairie Bible Institute and later that year she married Ted D. Thompson.  Donna lived, studied and worked in Seattle WA; Kitchener-Waterloo ON; Calgary, Olds, Innisfail, Carstairs and Three Hills AB; and Bogotá, Colombia.  Wherever she lived, her sweet spirit made friends quickly and her enthusiasm for learning made the adjustments to new places enjoyable.  It was while she was living in Bogotá that we noticed small changes in her personality.  Her enthusiasm for learning dimmed and her language ability was uncharacteristically reduced. Donna learned to shop and make friends even though she had limited Spanish, but as the changes occurred she started to have problems with English.  In 2000 Donna was diagnosed with Pick's Disease, a form of Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD).  Her life narrowed with the increasing loss of cognitive skills.  Despite not being able to speak coherently and with her memory diminished, she could still sing hymns and play her signature piano riff. As she become mute she would mouth the hymn lyrics, or keep time with her foot.  During the last seven years she lived in the Drumheller and Three Hills Continuing Care Centres.  Her sweet spirit still shone through the cloudy darkness of dementia.  Donna is survived by husband Ted D. Thompson and their four children: Margaret Thompson of Wetaskiwin AB, Jennifer (Steven) Stewart of Three Hills AB, Ryan Thompson and Lindsay Thompson both of Vancouver BC and by her 11 grandchildren: Devon, Jesse and Ty Ruser; Ashley Reber; and Emily, Graeme, Jeremy, Clara, Pearl, Olivia and William Stewart. Donna is missed by her sisters: Brenda (John) Gowling, Sharon Bright (Rod Keller) and Evelyn (Blair) Turner and brother- and sisters-in-law: Arlone (Ron) Lenz, Heather Thompson, Arthur (Crystal) Thompson, Kathleen (Bernie) Friesen and Hjordis (Brian) Rude. Donna was predeceased by her parents Vera and Wes Bright, her parents-in-law Olive and Howard Thompson and a brother-in-law Daniel Thompson. A Memorial Service was held on Monday, June 13, 2011 at Bethel Evangelical Missionary Church, Three Hills.  Interment was held in the Three Hills Cemetery.  Memorial tributes may be made directly to the DTHR, Continuing Care, Three Hills or the Gideons.  Heartland Funeral Services Ltd, Olds entrusted with arrangements. 403-507-8610 www.heartlandfuneralservices.com.
