Elsie Mehle - Oct. 1, 1912 - Aug. 26, 2010 - Mrs. Elsie Mehle (nee Leischner) passed away at the Kelowna Cottonwoods nursing home on August 26, 2010 at the age of 97 years. Elsie was born in Kaletchofka, Besserabia, Romania on Oct. 1, 1912. Her mother passed away when she was four. When she was fourteen, she came to the Hanna area in Alberta, Canada with her father, John Leischner. She married Albert Mehle on Dec. 20, 1931. For the next years, they moved several times - East Coulee, Michichi, Craigmyle, Bymoor, Delia, Leo, Hacket and Botha. As this was in the midst of the dirty thirties, they had many struggles with crops either dried or hailed out. Their four children were born during these trying years. In 1943 they purchased their farm in the Huxley/Trochu area near Donaldson School. In 1959 they moved to Calgary, then in 1966 bought Walters Resort at Pine Lake, tending the store, cabins and fishing boats. Then in Oct. of 1968, they moved to Kelowna and built a new house on Mission Hill overlooking Kelowna and Okanagan Lake. They celebrated their 60th Anniversary on Dec. 20, 1991. They have 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by her husband Albert on May 11, 1997 and her daughter Irene Wiancko on Dec. 14, 2006. She is survived by her only son Arthur (Debbie) Mehle of Ponoka, her daughters Lorene (Louis) Frere of Three Hills, AB, Mary Ann Bishop of Kelowna and their families. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 with interment following in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kelowna, BC.
