BONDAR, Pearl (Afonaseff)

BONDAR, Pearl (Afonaseff) passed away on November 10, 2010 at the age of 102 years. She passed away from pneumonia after a brief stay in the Three Hills Hospital. She has lived the Three Hills Robertson Manor and Golden Hills Lodge, since her husband Henry passed away on January 17, 1995. Pearl came to Canada in 1924 from Balchik, Bulgaria. She came with her widowed mother (Alexandra), two sisters Mary and Nora, and two brothers George and Bill. Pearl was the second oldest of six children. Her father (Gregory) and the eldest brother (John) died from the Spanish flu in 1919. Pearl, at the age of ten, was then the oldest and did not have a chance to attend school again. However, she was conversant in four Slavic languages during her youth, and learned English once she was in Canada. In the early years, Pearl acted as a second mother to the younger children, while her mother was working. Her Mother passed away in 1957. Pearl married Henry Bondar of Three Hills on June 15, 1928. Henry arrived from Russia in 1926 and worked on a farm for Sam Abramenko. Pearl and Henry met in Three Hills and were married at the United Church Manse in Carbon, with the Rev C.B. Oakley officiating. Pearl and Henry rented several farms during their earlier years and finally purchased a quarter section of land southeast of Three Hills from William King in 1938. A second quarter was added to this property. This is where Pearl raised her four children: Harry, Fred, Rose and Nina. Initially the children attended school at Mount Vernon and then later at the Bethel School which was one mile north of the family home. High school was attended in Three Hills. Henry and Pearl moved into a second home in Three Hills in 1951 and Henry continued to operate the farm until he was 65. The family still owns and manages the farm. Pearl and Henry celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary in June of 1993. Pearl was a very energetic person. In her early years, she worked as a house keeper, cooking and looking after children. Later, she had her own family, which kept her busy in the kitchen, gardening and working on the farm alongside Henry. As her own children married, she loved to attend to the grandchildren. She loved all of her nine grandchildren and her home was a wonderful place to visit and enjoy. She had boundless energy for these grandchildren, as she organized trips to the farm, fishing and picnics at the river with Grandpa. She lived in her kitchen and enjoyed having he whole family for gatherings. There was always room for everyone at her table. Her favourite expression to everyone was, "Eat, eat more". Many of the grandchildren have had lessons in making cabbage rolls and perogies. Pearl made cabbage rolls for all of her 100 guests and family at her 100th birthday celebration. As the years developed her favourite pastimes have been quilting, crocheting, gardening and visiting with friends. Everyone in the family has received quilts from Pearl and she made her last quilt last year at age 101. As well, she continued to make pillows until very recently.
