Seniors Outreach - July 20, 2022

REMEMBER: If you have turned 64, please be aware that there are some applications that you may need to complete and send in to deal with possible pensions and supports when you turn 65.

1. FEDERALLY: Canada Pension Plan (CPP)– You may apply for this anytime between 60 and 70 years of age. You need to send in an application in order to receive it. Processing may take up to 6 months, so sending it in at least 9-10 months before you wish to receive it is appropriate. This is your money and you are now getting it back on a monthly basis.

2. FEDERALLY: Old Age Security & Guaranteed Income Support (OAS/GIS) – You will not receive this any earlier than the month after your 65th birthday and you may hold off on receiving OAS/GIS until you are 70 years of age. Please discuss this with us before you decide what to do about this application. Again, if you wish to receive it on the month after your 65th birthday, please apply 9-10 months before you wish to receive it. OAS is for everyone at age 65, but GIS is only for low-income pensioners and is added on to the OAS payment each month if you are eligible for it (based upon your previous year’s income tax).

3. PROVINCIALLY: Alberta Seniors Financial Assistance (SFA) - This should be applied for approximately 3-4 months before your 65th Birthday. This provincial support, if you are eligible (based upon your previous year’s income tax), provides for:

a. Seniors Benefit – a monthly payment from Alberta Seniors. This benefit is calculated annually.

b. Special Needs Assistance – Some financial support for a variety of health supports, personal supports and (if you are living in your own home) a few appliances. Must apply for each item.

c. Dental and Optical Support (if your are under the income levels) – At the lowest financial income levels – Dental Support is $5,000 for 5 years ($ provided based on the provincial Dental Costing Chart at Alberta Dental Services) and Optical Support is either at $115 for 3 years or at the lowest level $230 for 3 years. Usually these are dealt with by your dentist or optometrist.

d. Home Owners: 2 Simple Interest Loan Programs (must be under $75,000 income as a single or couple via the previous year’s income tax). Both programs have their own application forms and for each program you may only borrow up to $40,000 at most). A lien will be put against your home and if sold or you must move (medical reasons or otherwise) – this lien with the Government of Alberta will be paid out first if you have not already paid it. You may repay this using a monthly system or facsimile or you do not need to repay it plus the simple interest until the home is sold or you must move out of it.

i. Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Program - Most home repairs are covered in order to allow you as a senior to stay in your own home for a longer period of time.

ii. Property Tax Deferral Program - This program covers your local property taxes for up to 10 years at most. The province will pay the property taxes directly to the local municipality for up to the 10 years if you request that many years.

e. PROVINCIALLY: Coverage for Seniors Blue Cross card – Approximately 3-4 weeks ahead of your 65th birthday, you should take your Alberta Health Card and either your Birth Certificate or a current Passport to the certified Registry in your area to apply for the Coverage for Seniors Blue Cross card. In the time frame after your application at the Registry (3-4 weeks), you should receive your card in the mail. Presently, the only registry that seems to be certified to do this application in Kneehill County is Adam B. Young Insurance & Registry in Three Hills.

Age 64 is a bit of a busy year, however, when you complete these forms, most of your work is done. The ongoing submission of receipts and program applications, as required, is then not quite as difficult a process.

Contact Seniors Outreach Program Society, if we can be of any assistance in helping you with these forms, submissions, or explanations regarding them. This is one reason that we are available to the senior residents of the Kneehill County area.
