Seniors Outreach - November 16, 2022

November Family Violence Prevention Month: As part of this month, Seniors Outreach recognizes the place of Elder Abuse. Elder abuse is a serious issue - it’s estimated that nearly one in 10 Alberta seniors may be victims of some form of elder abuse. What is elder abuse?

Alberta’s elder abuse prevention strategy updated the definition of elder abuse to include any intentional or reckless act or wilful and negligent disregard, occurring within a relationship of family, trust or dependency, directed at someone 65 years of age or older, that causes physical, emotional or psychological harm

-involves the misappropriation or misuse of money or other personal possessions or personal or real property

-subjects an individual to non-consensual sexual contact, activity or behaviour

-fails to provide the necessities of life

The most common types of elder abuse are: financial, emotional, physical, sexual, neglect, and/or medication. Depending upon the severity of the abuse, you may contact Seniors Outreach (403-443-2555) or the RCMP (403-443-5538 or 911).

GIFTS FOR GRANDPARENTS - This program provides a wonderful reminder of the Christmas Season for the Seniors in the Kneehill County area who may not be well connected to family and/or may be in a lodge, manor or long-term care and/or are in some financial hardship. Providing a gift for them, recognizes them and provides a wonderful understanding that we think about them and support them during the Christmas season.

FUNDING SUPPORT: Seniors Outreach will be looking for financial support of our “Gifts for Grandparents” Programs this Christmas. If you and/or your business are able to provide some help for this program, please do not hesitate to contact us. We value your assistance as we move through the last few months of 2022.
