SOCIAL ISOLATION: Perhaps the core concern as we age is that of Social Isolation. It creeps up on us as we deal with numerous triggers in our life such as children moving away from home to live and work, health issues that arise as we age, deaths of friends and acquaintances, ageism, lacking access to transportation, living with low income, and societal and/or technological challenges that we face in our lives. At the core, there is a tremendous need within us to identify ways to recognize our personal needs for ‘getting out’ and ‘interacting with others’.
How do we continue to live full and meaningful lives? Most importantly, we must recognize some key opportunities and provide ourselves some social ‘time well spent’ by connecting with at least a few others to build relationships – to visit, share time and ideas with, have ‘coffee’ with, play games with, eat with…..
Yes, I did say “eat with”. Food is a great leveller and cause for getting together. As we meet, eat and play with others it enhances our well-being.
Out of this social activity comes the ability and understanding of how important ‘community’ is. Studies have shown that “there is general agreement on the need to recreate a sense of community to encourage interactions and connections among neighbours and the larger community.”
So go “meet, eat, and play games” with others. It provides a great start to overcoming social isolation.
