Seniors Outreach News September 4, 2013

You may have heard the phrase, aging in place, as Alberta Health Services, the province, and the federal government all emphasize the need of it—but what does it actually mean.  One definition of aging in place is "the ability to live in one's own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level."  Aging in place allows seniors to have a choice or option in their living arrangements and care.
One article described aging in place as a symphony of service.  "Imagine if you will, an orchestra. Up front, you have your string section with violins, violas, celli, basses. You have your woodwind section with clarinets, oboes, bassoons, perhaps some saxes. Then there is the brass section with shining trumpets, trombones, a few baritones, a tuba. And in the back, you have the percussion section with a lot of fun instruments to bang on or crash together. But despite these different sections and variety of instruments, together they are an orchestra playing one piece of music.
For seniors in Kneehill County, you have your own symphony of service.  Rather than strings, you have health care including access to doctors, home care, dental, optical, dieticians, foot care, and various therapists. Instead of woodwind, you have housing, from your own home to various levels of independent living options, lodges and nursing homes.  Instead of brass, you have seniors' benefits including financial supplements, assistance with beds, lift chairs, appliances, house repairs, etc. And instead of percussion, there are essential services such as Meals of Wheels, Lifeline, and transportation to appointments. All the instruments or services in our symphony work together in harmony to make beautiful music and comfortable aging in place.
Speaking of music, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra is again offering open rehearsals to seniors 55+ and students. This year, the program is superb and includes Wagner, Shostakovich & Beethoven, Rachmaninoff & Ravel, Hungarian Rhapsody, Film Themes, and music from 2001: Space Odyssey.  Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity to enjoy fantastic music.  The first open rehearsal is on Thursday, October 3rd.
