Seniors Outreach - February 10, 2016

Since I am fairly new to our Program, I thought it would be a good time to review one of the most important aspects of our program and also share the information with you as well.

Transportation is one of the major needs of our seniors, to get to medical appointments, go to the grocery store and downtown, airport drop offs and also at times for trips to the city for other medical needs. In 2014, more than 2,860 individuals received rides through our bus service and caring car program. It took 4,460 volunteer hours to fulfill that need.

Twenty years ago, two passenger vans that were owned by the Town of Three Hills, were turned over to Seniors Outreach to help meet the transportation needs of the community. In 1997, the two vans were sold and a new 20 seat bus was purchased. In 2007, a Seniors Work campaign was established and local businesses made the purchase of a new 20 seat bus possible with the former bus being purchased by the Three Hills School. Seniors Outreach now has that 20 passenger bus, a new 16 passenger/6 wheelchair bus and a van with a hydraulic seat. We also have many caring car drivers throughout our service area to provide individual transportation needs.

Seniors Outreach operates the bus service around Three Hills on Tuesdays and Thursdays, ran by a volunteer bus driver. We take monthly trips to Red Deer and also do speciality trips, such as the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra trip. We also rent out both buses and the van for private use. Please call our office for more information on rentals and transportation services.

Our wonderful office volunteers are currently assisting us in compiling the statistics for 2015 and I am fairly confident the numbers above will rise. It is wonderful for us to be able to help seniors get where they need to go, as many folks are living here without family close to help and are no longer able to drive on their own.

If you are interested in volunteering with our transportation program or any other aspect of Seniors Outreach, please call our office at 403-443-2555. We are always looking for more volunteers and we appreciate all the amazing help we receive!
