"Let's go make school history," said the Acme Senior Boys Volleyball team and that they did, bringing home the Provincial banner from the host community of Taber.
It wasn't an easy path to Gold and the boys often found themselves struggling to overcome wide leads. During their first match with Mallaig (200 km north-east of Edmonton), the Redmen found themselves down in the first set 19-9 before successfully battling back with a win of 25-23. In the second set they were down 24-20 before winning it 26-24. That had to have been a very noisy gymnasium. The second match ended with a win over Heritage Christian (Calgary) 25-9 and 25-12. The host team of Taber, Acme's third match-up was very nearly the undoing of the Redmen team. Acme lost the first set 25-19 and won the second set 25-23. In the third set, Acme once again found themselves behind 13-8 before treating fans to a 15-13 victory. Match 4 put them in the cross-hairs of the Camrose team. The coaching staff had the Redmen check their egos and concentrate fully on team-fortified play. "Everyone got a chance to play in this match," said Coach Huddle "and they shared that defeat over Camrose 25-15 and 25-19."
The semi-final play had Acme facing Taber once again, who were looking to atone for their previous loss to the Redmen. Fans from both teams were the ultimate winners in this round as tensions increased further when Acme lost the first set 25-22. Scores continued to be tight and tensions high with Acme ultimately claiming victory with a 25-23 win and 15-13 win. Acme now faced the undefeated team of St. Mary/Westlock, winning the first set 25-18 and losing the second set 25-22. Destiny was truly in the capable hands of Acme with a final win of 15-9.
Acme Senior Boys made history! In 1982 the Acme Boy's Volleyball Program won their first Provincial title and 14 years later, in 1996 the Boy's Basketball Program won their first Provincial title. It is now 14 years later and the ball is now back in the court of Boys Volleyball with a 1A Provincial win. During those in-between years, since 1982, Senior Boys Volleyball brought home 10 Zone banners, chasing that elusive provincial title.
The team roster for 1A Provincials include Taylor Klassen, Brandon McCallum, Anthony Woodlands, Rob Toews, Ryan Kung, Luke Ruawerda, Colby Reimer, Patrick Woodlands, Aaron Kung, Joel Ratzlaff, Riley Keet, Blake Penner, and Rodney Ratzlaff. Coached by Murray and Justin Huddle.
