Three Hills opens new Disc Golf course on Prairie Campus

Disc Golf Grand Opening

Three Hills was first introduced to “Disc Golf” in 1988 when the Alberta Seniors Games came to town. For over two decades it was located on the grounds of the Three Hills Health Centre. Due to its close proximity to the Stars Helipad, AHS requested that the course be located.

When Kenton Barkman and Josh Wiley, of Three Hills, became aware of this they began conversations with Alberta Health Services (AHS), the Town of Three Hills and Prairie College to find a new home for the course.

“The baskets were old but thankfully we were awarded a town grant and were able to buy brand new baskets for a new course”, said Kenton. “We approached Prairie College about the possibility of using their land and they were really excited about the opportunity to do something for the community in this way”.

The two enthusiasts spent about 10 months designing the holes. Course installation took place on Saturday, May 15, 2021. It’s now located on Prairie College land North of the Rick Down Athletic Centre (RDAC). It is a nine-hole Disc Golf course that is ideal for beginners and intermediate players. Discs are similar to frisbees but they are smaller and heavier, thus they can be thrown much farther. According to Kenton, “Disc Golf was one of the world’s fastest growing sports in 2020.”

The Three Hills Disc Golf Course is open seven days a week and is free of charge for all ages, at all levels to play. Discs can be purchased at JK DISCS in Strathmore.

A Grand Opening of the new Three Hills Disc Golf Course was held on Saturday, July 17th, 2021. The day started with a free come and go where anyone could try out the course. Kenton Barkman was on hand lending out discs to about 50 people that morning.

At 1pm a Doubles Tournament was held. There were 15 teams (30 players) registered for the 18 holes of play. Winners were the Father and Son team of David and Josiah James, of Three Hills, with a round total of minus 10.

Tournament costs were covered by Kenton Barkman and Josh Wiley, prizes were donated by JK DISCS.
