That's Life - July 19, 2023

Congratulations to the nine youth accepted into the first-ever Three Hills RCMP Youth Academy. This was a tremendous opportunity for these young people to get a glimpse of what it takes to become an active and productive member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Hat’s off to Sgt. Jamie Day, his team of officers and administrative staff for making the week-long event such a tremendous success.

If you have never attended the Carbon Legion Soap Box Derby you are missing out. Head to Carbon this Saturday, July 22, and take in the fast-paced action.

Car inspection happens at 10 am with a start time of 11 am. There is a concession on-site serving up burgers, hot dogs, pop and water. There is a first, second and third prize for each category and a prize for most creative.

An interesting fact pertaining to the origin of the name “Soap Box Derby” goes back to Myron E. Scott, a photographer for the Dayton Daily News. He took a photo of some boys racing down a hill in little homemade cars. Scott noticed the cars both had been built using soap crates and had four wheels. He dubbed the race “Soap Box Derby”.

Come out to Carbon’s Soap Box Derby and cheer those participants on. The louder you cheer, the faster they go.

And just as I was thinking about having a banana milkshake at Peter’s Drive-in, in Calgary, I found out that Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution.

I lost interest in the shake as I thought about trying to suck it up through a paper straw. I will not go down in defeat. I am now travelling with my own reusable plastic straw. If pulled over by the “Straw Police” I will tell them it’s a pea shooter.

Don’t get me wrong, I do my part in cutting down on using single-use plastics. Our truck is full of reusable grocery bags. I also detest using plastic knives and forks. I also believe that Orange Crush, Coke and Seven-up taste much better from a glass bottle than plastic or tin. Help reduce single-use plastic waste every day at home, work and at play. Be part of the plastic pollution solution.
