How About We Impose Our Own Version of Church Rules

Dear Editor,

There is an old saying, “What’s good for the goose should be good for the gander”.Certain folks believe they are “entitled” to impose their religious beliefs on others. Such folks seem to forget that Canada is a diverse, democratic country with many different religious faiths, and they either don’t understand democracy, or they just don’t care about “undermining” the “civil rights” of other people.

What we see going on in America today proves that the “religious right” seeks to create a society governed by religious rules, a theocracy. We see examples of such societies in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India. Most of western Europe and most of Latin America were once ruled by conservative religious institutions, but over the past century we’ve seen many countries removing “official state religions” from dictating how people should live their lives.

So—for those who believe in religious dictatorships, how about we impose our own version of church rules. First, the Alberta government will establish an official provincial church (The Royal Church of Alberta) to rule our society. All other religious institutions would be abolished, and our religious leader would issue decrees (mandates) on how we are to live our lives.

This “official church” would demand that all couples be limited to one child. Women would be forced to have abortions if they became pregnant again. The men (husbands; significant others) would be “fixed” so they could not produce anymore children.

If a male/man is convicted of rape or incest (in a “religious court of law”), he would be castrated. If certain folks want to deny women the right to seek abortions or deny women access to the “Pill” or other contraceptives, then Alberta’s official church would severely punish men for sexually abusing women and children. Right?
