“What Is Wrong With You People?”

Dear Editor,

At the risk of being accused of the pot calling the kettle ‘black,' I would argue that people in this day and age, in which we are entering a very definite change in climate and the effects it will have in a few short years, should know better than indulge in cross-continent flights just to go on a sightseeing holiday. Or in a “dually” dragging a 30-foot trailer down to Arizona to spend the winter. Or driving a 30-foot motorhome with a car attached down to Mexico just because they can afford it.

If I were the children or grandchildren of these folks, I would be asking: “What is wrong with you people?” “Don’t you know that you are killing us?” If the kids aren’t questioning the behaviour of their travelling parents or grandparents than there is something drastically wrong with them. Or perhaps with the educational system. It is the responsibility of educators to make sure that students at every level are aware of what the future holds for them. And if the teachers aren’t preaching “climate change,” then it is up to the School Board and the Superintendents to make sure they are.
